Edinburgh grants approval to flagship music and performance venue
April 24 2019
The City of Edinburgh Council has today granted planning approval to the Dunard Centre, the first purpose-built music and performance venue to be built in the capital for a century.
The cultural flagship is being funded via £25m of City Deal funding, with support from the Royal Bank of Scotland, with the remainder of the cost being met through private donations – principally via the Dunard Trust who will also underwrite any capital cost overruns and operating deficits over the first three years.
Earmarked for a prominent site off St Andrews Square the venue will comprise a 1,000 seat auditorium, 200 seat studio, informal performance space, café and bar.
Sir David Chipperfield commented: “This will be a public building that relates to Edinburgh on a civic scale by both fitting in and standing out in order to perform an important social and cultural role in a city with strong established cultural traditions.”
