15-bed Merchant City hotel backed by planners

An A-listed office building in the heart of Glasgow’s Merchant City is to be transformed into a hotel following the approval of conversion plans put forward by Core Associates.
This would see The Jacobean Building present a ground floor bar/restaurant to Virginia Street with the upper floors transformed into a hotel, retaining period features and introducing disabled access in the process.
Central to this approach will be the creation of a new stair and lift core offering step free access to all floors from a rear courtyard by way of a new extension with a lift lobby located within the existing footprint to allow the core to be set back.
In a statement Core wrote: “The bedrooms and en-suites are generously sized and respectful to the existing fenestration on both the front and rear elevations. The proposed layouts indicate fifteen bedrooms as being the most feasible maximum number to provide the quality and layouts that best align with the character of this unique building.
“Access via the pend from Virginia Street into the rear courtyard provides an opportunity to create something akin to the quality and character of the adjacent Virginia Court development in this space.”
The new extension will be clad in curtain wall glazing and zinc.
