Edinburgh’s Western Harbour takes shape in detailed application

7N Architects have fleshed out their plans for a new neighbourhood on Edinburgh’s neglected waterfront with the submission of detailed plans for Western Harbour.

A collaboration between Forth Ports and Rettie the project will deliver 938 homes as well as shops, commercial space, a health centre and primary school – all centred on a huge new park incorporating play areas, meadows and woodland.

Designed in tandem with landscape architects Rankin Fraser the new community will encourage residents to take ownership of their streets by prioritising pedestrians over vehicles and delivering high quality public realm.

Ben Watson, project leader at 7N Architects said: “Western Harbour presents an unprecedented opportunity to create a new neighbourhood in our historic city that can begin to address Edinburgh’s housing needs and can act as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the city’s waterfront.”

Subject to the necessary consent’s construction ought to commence on site by the end of the year.

This looks really promising - miles better than anything previously built throughout the Western Harbour's sordid recent history (not that that's saying great deal) and should hopefully raise the bar for high-density resi development in Edinburgh. Public realm looks superb too. Fingers crossed this one gets fully built out...

Very generous public realm, and lovely to see trees taking centre stage. Encouraging stuff indeed. Let's hope this actually happens, unlike many of the "coming soon" schemes up the road at Granton.

A relief to see some decent design at Western Harbour, at last. The high rise buildings there ('The Pinnacle' etc.) are a Design and Build pile of mince.
