Edinburgh Airport plane spotter hotel to offer ‘conning-tower’ views
February 12 2019
Edinburgh Airport could play host to a new 200-bed hotel following submission of a proposal of application notice to construct new accommodation adjacent to Ingliston Road.
The Aviator Hotel would include its own double-height restaurant, bar and conference facilities and would be distinguished by a top floor ‘conning tower’ with glazed walls from which to view airport activity in comfort.
In a statement the applicant Flowpearl wrote: “The top-level Aviator Club is designed as a derivative conning-tower, with glazed walls and roof. A viewing tower for aircraft against the backdrop of the sky. The glazed and illuminated roof service structure together with the Aviator Club are composed to provide the 5th elevation as a recognisable portal to Edinburgh for air travellers.”
The hotel would slot into a wider masterplan for the Royal Highland Centre with construction expected to get underway by 2020.
Concept designs have been prepared by Jones Design Consultant.

Seems a bit a about t, no point in getting a permission for something that you can't build or restricts the design solution too much.
Having worked on hotel projects in the past it's not quite as simple as the diagrams would suggest to service 200 beds...

The drawing presented has a certain vintage to it and checking on the planning portal link, it seems to be an agent who isn't registered and is in his 70's, surely there's a bigger design team including a firm of architects working on a 200 bed hotel?
