Primary school hits planning at Leith Western Harbour

Plans for a new primary school as part of Forth Ports masterplan at Leith Western Harbour have taken shape with the presentation of plans by Holmes Miller on behalf of City of Edinburgh Council.

Situated in the heart of the new residential district Victoria Primary is considered to be a ‘catalyst’ for the wider regeneration of the waterfront, establishing a civic presence along Windrush Drive with a formal white precast collonade.

Playgrounds meanwhile will ‘flow’ into a proposed public park which will also double as outdoor teaching space.

In a statement the architects wrote: “The design of the school echoes the importance of the gables in traditional Scottish architecture and simply extrudes its profile to form the school accommodation.

“The blue accents on the classroom window louvred panels are scattered throughout the brick elevations and construct a playful reference to the use of the building.”

Faced in predominantly in cream brickwork prominent entrances and features will be highlighted through the use of precast panels and embossed text.
