Aberdeen Music Hall reopens following £9m transformation
December 10 2018
Aberdeen Music Hall has reopened its doors for the first time following a £9m makeover at the hands of Kier Construction and design team lead BDP, acting on behalf of Aberdeen Performing Arts.
Described as Scotland’s oldest concert hall the A-listed venue benefits from new public areas and improved access all while retaining period features.
This work necessitated extensive excavations in order to open up a new level in an expanded basement area while shoring up shallow foundations.
Sean O’Callaghan, area operations director at Kier Construction Scotland, commented: “Restoring and refurbishing this 200-year-old, national treasure has posed some incredibly complex engineering challenges, however, our skilled and committed team has delivered innovative solutions to expertly execute this work.”
BDP architect director Bruce Kennedy added: “We identified a series of radical interventions that unlocked a strategic redesign of spaces and circulation, transforming the way that people move through and use the building, opening it up to become accessible and inclusive both physically and culturally. The sensitively-conserved heritage of the A-listed building has been enhanced by BDP’s architectural lighting specialists, whilst the contemporary design of new elements and spaces mirrors the civic quality of the restored historic interiors.”
Together with upgrades to the 1,300-seat main auditorium the project also includes more flexible staging, a new foyer, improved rehearsal rooms, meeting spaces and offices.
