University of Edinburgh take possession of data science & AI hub

The University of Edinburgh has significantly expanded its data science and artificial intelligence resources with the unveiling of the Bayes Centre, a technology hub uniting academics and students within the Potterrow campus.

Designed by Bennetts Associates the 9,500sq/m building serves as a continuation of the Informatics Forum and Dugald Stewart Buildings, completed in 2008 by the same practice, bringing together a robotics lab, lecture theatres and flexible office space within one ‘synergetic’ design.

Connecting to existing buildings on several levels the Bayes Centre is dominated by an impressive public atrium, designed to promote transparency between both building users and the wider city.

Rab Bennetts, founding director at Bennetts Associates said: “Bayes Centre is the final phase of University of Edinburgh’s Potterrow development, which we began in 2003 following an architectural competition. It has been a privilege to observe the development taking its place at the centre of University life and playing a pivotal role in the evolution of Edinburgh’s highly successful ‘tech’ sector, something that now extends well beyond the university itself.”

Conceived to replicate the original street plan prior to the 1960s the campus is built around a series of pedestrian routes which cut through the block, embracing a public courtyard with floor to ceiling windows and a café.
