George Watson’s College reaches out with expansion drive
September 18 2018
George Watson’s College have begun a phased redevelopment of their Junior School, commencing with the creation of a Page\Park designed extension to the Upper Primary to improve its modern languages and music facilities.
ISG have been awarded the £4.8m contract will include a reception space, library, a music suite and five classrooms to replace ‘temporary’ accommodation elsewhere on the campus.
Conceived as a continuation of the current Upper Primary, which will itself be refurbished, the extension will be clad in stone and serve as a ‘gateway’ to the current primary from Myreside Road, with a new front entrance improving accessibility and first impressions for pupils, visitors and staff.
In their design statement the architects wrote: “The Upper Primary Entrance Extension will form the key marker in a new landscaped Plaza connecting both the Upper and Lower Primary around a shared entrance plaza.
“This space will create a new focused arrival point for the primary school campus allowing parents and pupils to congregate at the start and end of the day. It will also become a key space for the School sharing a vantage point over the Myreside Road Pitch, becoming a key space for open days, galas and sports days.”
Work should complete by September 2019, presaging future phasing as part of a wider masterplan that also includes an enlarged nursery.
