Glasgow & Dundee share £4.3m science centre windfall
August 8 2018
Glasgow and Dundee science centres are to share a £4.3m funding pot to develop their programmes as part of a broader £13m investment in six British science centres by the Inspiring Science Fund.
The award will allow Glasgow Science Centre to invest £2.9m in its Connect programme which envisages ‘huge’ changes to its exterior to create a series of outdoor exhibition spaces as well as improving its existing facilities.
To be implemented over the coming years the project will transform Pacific Quay with hands on exhibits, seating and sculptures, enlivening the waterfront as a space for play, discovery and events but is dependent on the centre securing match funding.
Simon Chaplin, director of culture & society for the Wellcome Trust, said: “At Wellcome we focus on people, and our public engagement activity is about helping everyone to play their own role in improving health. The Inspiring Science Fund enables science centres across the country to bring science, health and research closer to public.”
Dundee Science Centre meanwhile will receive £1.45m to build a new exhibition and learning suite which could be unveiled in spring 2021.
