Mavisbank House back from the brink
July 30 2008
Minister announces stabilisation programme for Mavisbank HouseLinda Fabiani, MSP, Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture has announced a £2m stabilisation programme for Mavisbank House in Loanhead, Midlothian.
Mavisbank is a Palladian mansion built between 1723 and 1727 by William Adam. The house has consisted of little more than a shell following a devastating fire in 1973 and has been under constant threat of demolition.
Historic Scotland will pursue compulsory acquisition of the House and explore how greater public benefit can be gained from its ownership of the policies – the large area of designed landscape which the House overlooks.
The stabilisation measures, which include erecting a temporary roof on Mavisbank House, will arrest the deterioration of this historically significant category A-Listed house and secure its immediate future.
