Dundee school closure frees up land for housing
July 25 2018
Oliver + Robb Architect, CCG and Abertay Housing Association are partnering on the delivery of 43 affordable homes at Dunholm Place, Dundee, on the site of the former Charleston Primary.
Forming a mix of terraced, semi-detached and detached homes the scheme sits within an area dominated by 1950’s terraced and tenement housing, adopting a palette of facing brick, render and weatherboarding below pitched tiled roofs.
In a statement the architects observed: “The layout is orientated around the primary and secondary road structures. Massing of buildings to the north is reminiscent of the adjacent existing properties that they back on to. Linear gardens create an expansive window to window distance between new and existing, improving privacy.
“The juxtaposition of the central units seeks to address both the primary and secondary routes, create visual interest and interaction and distinctive nodes points.”
Pedestrian connections to the surrounding estate will be created with a SUDs pond situated in an undevelopable area below overhead power lines.
