Pollokshields mosque expansion heralds golden age
July 24 2018
An existing mosque in Pollokshields, Glasgow, has submitted plans for an ambitious contemporary extension to cater for a growing congregation.
Inkdesign Architecture have been drafted in by Masjid Noor to draw up plans for the significant expansion of their current Forth Street property, improving the layout and physical condition of the old mosque in the process.
Built in 1979 the Masjid Noor Mosque will have its front elevation extended out to the street in order to create additional floor space and improve its appearance, incorporating a partially constructed basement area inherited from a prior expansion bid.
This will front a new double height prayer hall and circulation space adorned by a striking minaret clad in perforated metal.
In a materials statement the architects wrote: “The double height, main prayer hall space will be visible from all sides of the development, as this is aimed to be the main focus of the building. This impact is reduced slightly on the front elevation because it is set back from the street line. The result of which will keep the height of the streetscape similar to what is currently in place.
“A bright perforated metal cladding material with a silhouette like pattern is proposed to clad the prayer hall. This feature will be repeated through other key points of the building to highlight prominent areas including the main entrance and through some of the circulation spaces.”
