Fountainbridge urban ‘neighbourhood’ given green light
Real estate giant Vastint has obtained planning permission from City of Edinburgh Council to proceed with the first phase of a new ‘urban quarter’ on the site of the former Fountain Brewery.

The planned urban ‘neighbourhood’ balance a mix of commercial, residential and leisure uses on the brownfield city centre site including a 262 bed Moxy hotel and restaurant fronting a new civic space.

Dubbed New Fountainbridge the development will also include a ‘landmark office’ and retail together with family homes and canal-side apartments.

Chris Jetten, development manager at Vastint said: “Our plan heralds a fresh start for Fountainbridge and we look forward to working with the community to create a vibrant, new neighbourhood that forms a distinctive, urban quarter in Edinburgh.”

Phase one of the plan, designed by 3DReid to include the hotel and 56,370sq/ft of office space, will move on-site by the end of the year. A separate planning application for the residential component of the scheme will also be lodged later this year.

“create a vibrant, new neighbourhood that forms a distinctive, urban quarter in Edinburgh.”

Surely they should start with good architecture rather than this banal 1970s brick box? Such terrible non-architecture is what we should be removing and not building.

I've lived in this area for over five years now. The constant delays and revisions to plans etc for what are essentially city centre sites is endlessly frustrating.

Hope this one actually goes ahead.

Defies logic - demolish carbuncle brewery just to build identical carbuncle warehouse.

How come Moxy hotels varies so much in design? See the one next to Frankfurt Airport - why couldn't we have a one for one copy of that?
