Dundee’s Maxwelltown Works to host 57 homes
May 15 2018
Affordable housing specialist Culross and Caledonia Housing Association have teamed up with JM Architects to submit plans for a residential transformation of a former engineering works in Dundee to form 57 homes.Maxwelltown Works will include a mix of tenures, physically reconnecting Hilltown Park with a new community campus on Alexander Street to the south, through reinstatement of the former Elizabeth Street.
Taking the historic tenements of Hilltown for its cue the scheme adopts a coarse grey render finish and grey brick basecourse across the whole site, including a mix of four-storey flats and three-storey terraced houses.
In a statement JM wrote: “Render is a traditional material but is used on many contemporary housing developments as if detailed
correctly it is easy to maintain and hard wearing, but looks good and can give a building a modern, crisp aesthetic.
“Overall the design aims to reshape the built character of the site/area and to contribute to the success of the regeneration within Alexander Street and the Hilltown as a whole by offering affordable homes within an attractive residential development in a mixed tenure environment.”
Straddling a steeply-sloping site stepped landscaping will be necessary to marry levels.
