Back to school for Ruchill
July 22 2008
Glasgow City Council have lodged a planning application to create two eight classroom schools. The combined campus will accommodate a nursey and autism unit all sharing gymnasium, library and media suite facilities on a site next to Ruchill hospital. The newly formed Highpark and St Cuthbert’s Primaries replace the non denominational Westercommon and Ruchill primaries along with catholic Our lady of The Assumption and St Cuthbert’s Primaries.
In total some 500 children will be served by the facility which replaces playing fields on a site said to be rarely used.
The schools announcement comes on the back of wider UK concerns at poor implementation of new school designs. Criticisms voiced include bullying hotspots in secluded yards, noisy open plan areas and ill lit, over heated classroom areas.
The scheme is designed to serve a wider £50 million plan to rejuvenate the former hospital site with some 500 homes, including restoration of a landmark grade A listed water tower.
