Twin ‘grand villas’ proposed for Pollokshields
January 3 2018
Sheppard Robson Architects have brought forward plans to build 24 flats at Sutherland Avenue in Pollokshields on land currently occupied by Mount Carmel House.Spread across two separate three storey blocks the scheme has been conceived as a pair of ‘grand villas’ of comparable scale to neighbouring houses within the West Pollokshields Conservation Area.
Outlining their design approach the architects said: “A modern, high quality buff facing brick is proposed for all elevations. A variety of tones throughout the brick will complement the honey coloured sandstone of the adjacent villas. A rusticated base plinth of recessed brick courses adds articulation to the façades.
“Large openings, vertically proportioned make reference to the surrounding windows of the grand villas. Where the openings are not fully filled with glazing infill panels of powder coated metal to match the colour of the window frames.
“Projecting above the eaves line at considered points across the roofscape are dormer windows. clad in the same metal as the infill panels. The entrance slot breaking up the mass of each building is bookended with full height fixed glazing.”
Soft landscaping will include a network of paths offering scope for both walks and efficient access.
