Barras action plan kicks into gear
A Glasgow City Council initiative to kick-start regeneration of the Barras is to move up a gear with the identification of future capital initiatives.

Work to deliver the next phase of public realm improvements to the area in January with an upgrade of paving within the Barras itself and at the Mercat Cross, preceding streetscape improvements to the Gallowgate and London Road from the autumn.

Councillor Kenny McLean, commented: “The Calton Barras Action Plan has achieved a significant amount in recent years - as the success of businesses such as St Luke’s and the improved shopfronts show - but more needs to be done.  So I am delighted that the ongoing and future work we will be doing with our partners will continue the transformation of this important area, itself a gateway to the city centre and the East End.”

Councillors are already looking further ahead with a view to maintaining recent momentum; including the St Luke’s venue, Many Studios and the BAaD events space.

Forthcoming projects include the City Deal backed regeneration of the former Meat Market site, for which a draft masterplan has already been prepared.
