Plans prepared for third wave of Pennywell homes
September 15 2017
Urban Union and Barton Willmore have drawn up plans for an additional 315 homes for Edinburgh’s Pennywell district in a third phase of delivery expected to hit the ground by mid-2018.Part of a wider masterplan to deliver 715 homes over the next 10 years the scheme will offer a mix of houses and flats unified through the use of common light brown/red brick, chosen for its durability.
The urban design strategy adopted stresses the accessibility of space to allow people to traverse through Pennywell unimpeded while delivering a clearly defined ‘edge to the development to impart a sense of place.
Articulating their architectural approach Barton Willmore wrote: “The key considerations are the mix of 2 storey houses and three to four storey flats, the different proportions of streets and spaces proposed and the proposals for the public realm and landscape design which clearly define the different street types. This creates a diversity and richness in the buildings and spaces through size,
proportion, orientation and function.”
Construction is presently underway on phase 2 with completion expected by next year.
