Glasgow Airport & Clyde waterfront plans crystalize
Renfrewshire Council is pressing ahead with an ambitious masterplan for the Clyde waterfront and Glasgow Airport with the submission of two separate planning applications.

Delivered through the Glasgow City Deal £90.7m of waterfront work will include a Kettle Collective designed swing bridge connecting Renfrew and Yoker, opening up 83 hectares of vacant and derelict sites earmarked for 27,480sq/m of industrial space; 10,000sq/m of retail; 1,690 homes; 2,800sq/m of office space and 2 hectares of public space.

£39.1m of investment has also been lined up for the Glasgow Airport Investment Area which will establish a new business park offering in excess of 200,000sq/m of office space, 100,000sq/m of industrial space and 250 homes around another new bridge spanning the White Cart Water.

In a statement Renfrewshire Council wrote that the work would: “… regenerate the Clyde waterfront as an attractive riverside and urban area that supports existing communities and promotes new residential, industrial, commercial, business and leisure opportunities. With the construction of a new ‘opening’ bridge across the River Clyde, which will accommodate vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, and the construction of the Renfrew North Development Road, the project will better link communities and businesses on both sides of the river.”

Should these applications prove successful it is hoped a start can be made on site for summer 2018 with completion programmed for summer 2020.

Compare and contrast with the 'proposals' for land by Edinburgh Airport. Night and Day.

The swing bridge is a bit dull looking. Could there not be some large sculptures either side of the bridge to add a bit of interest. Something with historical, local or current links. A scaled down crane on the North side and an aviation connection on the South. We should be trying to make the waterfront as interesting as possible, having water boats cruising up the Clyde and back ,for tourists , school children on educational trips and locals to enjoy. Visited Bremen in Germany 15 years ago , a city smaller than Glasgow and they were doing this with their river giving tourists a commentary on the river's history. The Clyde and its proud and sometimes tragic history has been sadly neglected. Glasgow is missing a trick here especially with all the conferences the SECC campus attracts. Maybe the new bridge will look better in reality. Hope it does but anything built on our waterfront should be showcasing our city and region. Being functional or practical is not enough.
