University of Edinburgh launches student centre consultation
June 27 2017
Edinburgh University has unveiled plans for a radical extension to Teviot Row House, billed as the world’s oldest purpose-built student union, under a £75m modernization plan.Occupying a gap site between George and Bristo Square the Student Centre would provide a one-stop shop for university services and student wellbeing; including cafes, foodhalls and a nightclub.
Indicative plans drawn up by Page\Park have will be put on display for the first time today, illustrating how a rear access lane could be reborn as a public square.
University principal Sir Timothy O’Shea commented: “This inviting, inspiring space will underpin our vision to deliver an outstanding student experience. It will create a home from home where students feel welcomed and inspired to achieve their full potential.”
The phased project will begin with refurbishment of the existing gothic pile next year but full completion of the ambitious project isn’t planned until 2024.

It will be interesting to hear what sort of feedback this gets. Certainly it looks to have the potential of being a very fine project. However I am not at all convinced by view from Charles St!

What's the first view UR? I can't place the rather Greek Thomson building on the site - is this from another Page\Park job?

The 'Greek Thomson-style' building is the Reid Concert Hall. The new build next to it is fronting Charles Street Lane.

Love this. Charles St Lane has the potential of being a fantastic public space. Beautiful proposals and drawings.

#3 Thanks UR - don't think I'd ever seen that side of it before. Hadn't appreciated just how much just how much demolition this scheme entails - looks like everything on the north side of Charles St Lane is going apart from Teviot itself, so not strictly the gap site development this is being badged as...

Reserve judgement till full set of plans available but immediate thoughts are that more respect is required to the original Teviot Row and I prefer the current unassertive pharmacy building to the showy assymettrical building which has no place in George Square.
