Threesixty Architecture to deliver Orkney research hub

The £6.5m project is being led by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Orkney Islands Council to provide a home for institutes, consultancies and startups in an environment melding research, academia and business.
In a statement the architects said: “The design by Threesixty Architecture will renovate and unify the two existing buildings as one campus. Each building will feature new entrances, improved circulation, open plan offices, and shared meeting spaces which frame views to the Stromness harbour to create an inspiring setting for users and visitors alike. The historic Old Academy building façades will be largely preserved while the Primary School envelope will be entirely upgraded, harmonising it within the urban context of Stromness.”
Work is expected to commence on-site later in the year for completion by 2019.

'Urban context' has much more relationship with the face of the quay wall than any local building.

Future eyesore in the making. Sad really given the stunning example of how a contemporary building can work in a contextual way, not more than 300 yards away.

Really?
Looks like a workaday, banal, crude commercial facade to me. This is a real shame for Stromness. The building doesn't need to harmonise with the townscape (given the starting point how could it anyway?), it just needs to be a good design in and of itself.

Great idea. But they could maybe go back to the drawing board and come up with a different design.
