Sustainable Communities Initiative Launched
July 1 2008
Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon and Finance Secretary John Swinney formally initiated the Scottish Sustainable Communities Initiative, which intends to encourage local authorities to "propose more sustainable communities" as part of the solution to meeting housing requirements in their areas.
The initiative is part of the SNP Government's "vision" of more homes of all tenures built to higher environmental and design standards.
"This initiative aims to bring strong and innovative design and building principles into our settlements, and promote exemplars of how communities could live in the future," said Sturgeon in a statement.
"Sustainable communities are vitally important for our long term economic and social success. We hope that local authorities, landowners and developers play their part and contribute to the future sustainable growth of Scotland."
John Swinney claimed that the Scottish Government is committed to creating an enduring legacy of high quality, distinctive new developments.
