A museum, archive and hospitality venue housed within Stornoway’s A-listed Lews Castle has today been formally opened following completion of an extensive restoration led by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

The £19.5m project was overseen by WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff to provide a sustainable future to the 19th century home, which had lain derelict for 25 years before the local authority intervened.

Brenda Jones, director at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, said: “The project has rescued a Category A listed building and given it a sustainable future as a museum, archive and hospitality venue which the public will have full access to for the first time in its 170-year history, which is a very exciting prospect.”

Lews Castle is the largest single project ever undertaken by the local authority in the hope that it will draw increased numbers of tourists to the Outer Hebrides through display of objects and artefacts drawn from the region – including six Lewis Chessmen from the British Museum.

The project design team included Simpson & Brown, Graham Construction and Malcolm Fraser.
