Glasgow’s Trongate looking up with warehouse conversion
Glasgow’s Trongate appears to be on the up in the wake of the giant Candleriggs Quarter project with the emergence of plans to convert a B-listed former warehouse building designed by J T Rochead for residential use.

Jewitt and Wilkie Architects acting on behalf of Cartland Holdings propose to fashion five serviced apartments within the upper floors of a corner block at 97-10 Trongate, including addition of a two storey duplex, accessible from a new entrance off 101 Trongate.

Explaining their approach the architects said: “The applicants are keen to have the new main entrance brought back to standard befitting the quality of apartments they will be offering. New stonework will be used to tie the main entrance in with the upper floors, and the applicants will propose a scheme of restoring the ground floor shop unit, that will hopefully include the removal of existing advertising canopies and vinyl stuck on adverts at signage level.”

Complementary signage alterations will be conducted in tandem with this work to a newsagent at street level, enhancing the properties kerb appeal with a matt black timber panel and discreet lettering.

Serviced apartments aren't residential!

Oh come on.

At best, you could argue that it is honest - we need two more floors of accommodation to make the business case stake up: bingo - job done.

At worst - where is the architecture?!

I know Glasgow loves a crap roof top extension proposal but there is no excuse whatsoever for something quite so clunky and indifferent to context particularly at that location when it is right next door to a centre for the visual arts like Trongate 103!

As architects JWA should be mortified that this bit of ‘meh’ is the best they can deliver.

Where is your mojo and what has happened to your ambition?

Remember the fun to be had with completely off the wall stuff like Coophimmelb(l)au’s Rooftop Remodeling Falkestrasse for the Viennese law firm Schuppich, Sporn, Winischhofer, Schuppich?

Hmmm?

While it's great to see the original building being revitalised, the rooftop duplex is an astonishingly lazy piece of design. I could have done that in Windows Paint.
