Roberston Construction have handed over an £8.8m primary school on North Uist to Comhairle nan Eilean Siarl, the seventh to be opened by the local authority in the past six years.

Sgoil Uibhist a’ Tuath was designed by 3DReid Architects, in the logistically challenging environment of the Western Isles, to deliver childcare, early years and primary education in addition to a base for community activities.

The school was procured through procured through Scape Group’s National Major Works framework, a public sector built environment specialist.

In a statement the architects said: “The form of the building takes the appearance of a rectangular ‘A’ with the central facilities on the middle crosspiece facing both the entrance court and sheltering wall and the internal court, the library at the topmost crosspiece facing into the internal court, the classrooms facing outward and the corridors inward to the court on either leg connecting the crosspieces and the ancillary accommodation and nursery on the projecting arms either side of the entrance court. 

“Within this model intervisibility was provided across the internal court between the central facilities, the library and linking corridors which were themselves provided with glazed screens into the classrooms and activity spaces. The greater ceiling height requirement of the gym was extended over the central facilities to create a distinct ‘box’ of different character and providing honorific status or civic presence to the building.”
