Saltcoats expansion to deliver 24 new homes
February 13 2017
McTaggart Construction and Anderson Bell + Christie have filed plans for 24 new homes and associated infrastructure in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, having been instructed by Cunninghame Housing Association to deliver a third phase of housing at Sharphill.A mixture of semi-detached houses and cottage flats are positioned to provide oversight of connecting roads from living areas, completing an estate off Dalry Road which has already delivered 59 homes.
The greenfield development occupies a steeply sloping plot necessitating the use of retaining walls to rationalize topography with pedestrian and vehicular access routed off Dalry Road.
In their design statement the architects observed: “Each house type has a repeating key feature which enhances the elevation such as soldier courses at the head of key brick panels. There are also articulated elevations which include a special ground hallway window coupled with a spandrel panel. The width of the window will establish a contrasting brick panel above that ties in with the upper hallway window and is capped with a soldier course.”
By restricting a materials palette to the use of brick the architects have striven to engender a ‘unified appearance’ for the estate.
