Retirement flats for Largs seafront secure planning ok
February 13 2017
Stewart Associates have won planning consent to demolish the former Victoria Hotel on Gallowgate Street, Largs, to enable construction of 12 one bed flats for the elderly above ground floor retail.RDK Construction and Cunninghame Housing Association propose to add to the seafront esplanade by building a contemporary-styled block maximising views out across the Clyde.
Serving as a bookend development the structure will rise to five storeys across its full extent and will be faced in a combination of buff brick, pre-cast concrete and bronze cladding panels.
In their design statement Stewart Associates observed: “The new frontage utilises a varied roofline with a corner feature and projecting dormers (echoing those to the adjacent blocks) to not only create visual interest, but also to provide a vertical emphasis to the Gallowgate façade, reflecting the proportions of neighbouring properties.”
Approval was granted last week by North Ayrshire Council despite concerns raised by some objectors who labelled the building as a ‘rather poor effort at a 1960’s office block, more suitable for the back streets of some major city than the seafront at Largs.”
