Taylor Architecture Practice (T.A.P) have given shoppers at East Kilbride shopping centre a leg up with a newly unveiled aerial adventure course at ‘The Hub’.

Aerial Adventures takes the form of a symbiotic climbing wall attached to the central atrium above the mall’s ice rink as part of an initiative by Orion Capital Partners to diversify its leisure offer.

Part of a wider remodeling by BDP the intervention includes a high-level assault course suspended from the roof and a pod insertion containing a reception area, changing facilities and a café.

To avoid distracting skaters below a suspended ‘halo’ of translucent polycarbonate has been hung to block line of sight to the array of obstacles lurking above.

Outlining their vision T.A.P noted: “The central portion of the wall is for climbing on whilst the two wings conceal large ventilation ducts. The intent was to provide a continuous, crystalline surface which forms a dramatic backdrop to the ice rink arena. The existing back wall of the ice rink and part of the second floor was removed to provide space for the climbing wall, which sits on a balcony at first floor level, open to the ice rink.”

The complex geometry of the resulting insertion necessitated a rigorous modelling process to create a precise curvature for the new wall.
