Glasgow City Council push £9m Byres Road public realm enhancement

A public consultation has identified the need for a full redesign of the street with improved surfaces, reduced clutter and new seating to create a more pleasant environment for pedestrians and cyclists while improving access to the University of Glasgow.
Construction work is expected to get underway toward the end of 2018 on the project which would fashion a number of new civic spaces along the route on underutilized land such as Ashton Road car park, the Church Street triangle and important junctions at Chancellor and Great George Street.
Councillor Frank McAveety, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Byres Road is a jewel in the crown of Glasgow’s economic and social life, attracting visitors from Glasgow and beyond to its attractions during the day and at night. This consultation process will help to ensure that it remains in this position by informing how best to shape the Byres Road that everyone with an interest in the area wants, and I would urge all stakeholders to participate.”
Local architects Benton Scott-Simons are leading the design team and will undertake a series of community consultations from 23 February at Hillhead Library.

Can we have the same for Finnieston please, gorgeous looking shops and bars, but the streets and general environment are a mess!

How would they propose to deal with the diversion of the often heavy traffic that 'flows' through Byres Road?

Byres Road? That wonderful artistic and intellectual hub, where all the artisans are?

At last; would help if owners of upper floor properties would clean their windows, clean their gutters and spruce up the paint work. We live in a city of middens.

Great to see. I can't help thinking though that with the high levels of footfall the traffic issues need to be somehow resolved.
Finnieston is as as you say EMO also in dire need of significant improvements.

Would be nice to remove traffic from Byres Road.... close it completely for pedestrian

The first step would be to democratise the street, remove car parking! Any reduction of on-street car parking would make a massive difference to traffic flows - providing more room for all vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and trees. The on-street car-parking is wildly inefficient with an extremely low proportion of vehicles actually being able to get a space.
