Glen Affric spa pavilion picks up steam
December 2 2016
The private Highland estate of Glen Affric looks set to gain a new spa pavilion at the hand of Rodic Davidson Architects following submission of revised proposals for a V-shaped recreational pavilion.Embedded within the south-east slope of the valley the low-slung property will offer guests expansive views across Loch Affric as well as a sitting room, snug, spa and gym.
In their design statement the architects observed: “Building uses are divided into two parts with the sitting room/snug area reaching eastwards on a lower level and spa/ gym area facing westwards on a higher level. The pavilion’s form was developed to address this divison, but also to follow the natural terrain of the hill with reference to the mountains beyond.
“The building gently slopes down and thus nestles more discretely into the landscape. As such, the architecture becomes an integral part of the terrain as opposed to standing out in the form of a solitary object.”
Formed from base slabs of concrete panels, floor to ceiling glazing and solid walls clad in local stone to the rear the property will be overlaid by a sedum green roof to give the appearance of a ‘continuous green blanket’ when viewed from above.
