Niddrie Mill Primary enjoys residential makeover
November 8 2016
CCG and Parc Craigmillar have rejuvenated the former Niddrie Mill Primary School through creation of 66 mixed tenure homes whilst retaining the school façade, which had deteriorated to a parlous condition. The Schoolhouse comprises a mix of terraced and flatted timber frame housing the development was built with insulation, windows and doors all pre-installed – allowing construction of three terraced homes in just seven weeks.
CCG director Calum Murray commented: “Embracing the challenge, we worked tirelessly to develop a solution that preserved as much of this iconic building as possible by retaining the school façade; refurbishing the cupola and weather vane, and preserving the 1899 Wauchope War Memorial. By integrating this with modern construction methods, we have maximised the energy performance of the building and created modern, spacious apartments.”
Designed by Halliday Fraser Munro the buildings adopt a contemporary elevational treatment of facing brick to tie in with the original school building, part of ongoing regeneration efforts in the wider Craigmillar area.
Off-site fabrication was chosen partly to reduce vehicle movements on the congested Niddrie Mains Road
