Enabling works commence on £12m refurbishment of University of Edinburgh tower

Construction firm Robertson has begun enabling work on a £12m overhaul of the University of Edinburgh’s Darwin Tower to create a new school of biological sciences.The 18 month contract will clear the way for the 1960’s block to be extended with the addition of a new three storey building and plant room on the site of the current library and other out buildings, reached by a new access road.
Fielden Clegg Bradley have drafted designs for a glazed ‘bio cube’ by overcladding the existing structure with a curtain wall skin.
Full completion of the overhaul is expected to be in place by 2021.
