Planners sanction mixed use development of former Edinburgh stables

One of 12 city centre sites singled out for priority development by the council the scheme will see a motley collection of former offices, storage and workshops transformed with 59 new homes, an arts facility, 92 bed hotel, a 167 room student accommodation block and ground floor retail.
Charles Vyvyan from CDM said:“This is an exciting mixed use development which is proving very attractive to potential residents and occupiers alike, and will revitalise this neglected part of the city centre. This part of the Grassmarket is not viewed in a particularly attractive light and our exciting proposals will breathe much-needed life into this part of the Old Town providing residential flats, a hotel, student accommodation, and facilities to accommodate and promote the arts.”
Central to the cultural aspect of the scheme is an inner courtyard which will be given over to an arts-led hub, intended to become a key space for festivals and a destination in its own right.

I actually preferred the older version of this development - with the roof level garden terraces. I think the pitched roofs were introduced to try and stop the Cockburn Association from imploding with outraged indignation - which they do with every project in Edinburgh that doesn't look like a stage set from Brigadoon. Needless to say, it didn't work - they still turned up to the Planning Meeting predicting the Apocolypse if this scheme was approved. Thankfully CEC ignored them and gave the green light.

Agree with everything Basho says re the Cockburn Association and greys can also bear fruit.
