Boroughmuir High School set for housing-led transformation
May 27 2016
Edinburgh’s B-listed Boroughmuir High School is set to be transformed into new housing by CALA under a proposal drawn up by Michael Laird Architects, following the school’s relocation to a purpose-built campus in Viewforth.Concept designs show a newly formed open courtyard with 87 mezzanine apartments slotted into the large classroom spaces alongside an additional 28 affordable homes within a separate annexe and new build.
David McGrath managing director with CALA Homes (East), said: “We are at the very earliest stages of the process and will be consulting widely with the local community.
“While we believe we have come up with a sympathetic restoration plan which will enhance an already thriving area, there is a long way to go and we want to seek the views of local people.”
A public exhibition of the proposals will take place on 17 June between 15:00 and 19:00 and from 09:00 to 13:00 on the 18th at St Oswald’s Hall, Montpelier Park, ahead of a formal planning application later this year.

I think this project looks potentially very interesting. A lot of school conversions, especially in Leith have been pretty disappointing. However the top image gives an idea of something quite different and imaginative. Just hope it doesn't get watered down for cost reasons.
