Scotland’s oldest theatre given £1.5m facelift
Scotland’s oldest theatre is looking as good as new following a £1.5m upgrade and expansion at the hands of ARPL Architects.

Dumfries’ Theatre Royal was built in 1792 and occupies a prominent corner plot in the town centre but had latterly become rundown with a deterioration in the building fabric and outdated technical installations.

Now with the addition of adjoining properties the theatre is once again at the centre of the town’s creative landscape.

In a statement ARPL said: “The design rationalised circulation and created a new three storey foyer giving access to the theatre, a new studio rehearsal space, workshops, costume stores and environmentally controlled costume stores. “

Works were funded by the Holywood Trust, HLF and Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Neat, crisp, looks effective and references the buildings either side. And all on a tight budget. Well done.
