Chancellor offers £5m grant to make Helensburgh leisure centre a reality
March 17 2016
Chancellor George Osborne has used his budget statement to confirm that the UK will pump £5m into a pier head leisure centre in Helensburgh for use by the public and members of the armed forces.Part of Hoskins Architects Pierhead Waterfront master plan the £17m scheme will include a ‘landmark’ swimming pool and leisure centre alongside new shops, a café and a series of public realm enhancements when it opens in 2019.
This included tentative plans for a Submarine centre.
Osborne said: “We backed the V&A Museum in Dundee, and in response to the powerful case made by Ruth Davidson (Scottish Conservative leader), we are providing new community facilities for local people in Helensburgh and the Royal Navy personnel in nearby Faslane, paid for by Libor fines."
The cash has been raised by a series of fines slapped down on some of the country’s biggest banks following the Libor rate fixing scandal, with other schemes to benefit including a £150k regeneration scheme in New Cumnock, East Ayrshire.

Good news! Helensburgh is an amazing little town with loads of potential to be a real destination. I really hope this goes ahead.

While I generally agree with BC's comments regarding bland lazy modern architecture (see other UR news items) I don't think this new 'Weegie Plus' style Chantelle is really working. Time to ease back out of the accent a la Ross from Friends https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmTUOuXPlnA

I have to agreed with the others in that I'm becoming increasingly bored with the new extreme 'Big Chantelle' character.....Urban Realm, how about doing us all a favour and not approving any further comments from this username?
