UHI to build 40 bed Dornoch student accommodation block
March 11 2016
Cityheart are to build a 40 bed accommodation block in Dornoch for students of North Highland College UHI as part of a larger roll out of accommodation in the region for the university.Designed by ThreeSixty Architecture the scheme will be arranged in clusters of single rooms with shared living spaces alongside a residential/holiday let build which will be subject to a separate application.
Located on the site of a disused abbatoir, now demolished, the site lies out with the conservation area close to the town centre with a palette of render and timber effect cladding intended to act as a contemporary addition to the historic setting.
In a design statement the architects noted: “The accommodation is laid out in an L-shape which allows the block to address and reinforce the two mains streets that it faces. This L-shape is broken up into two main blocks with a clearly separated entrance core linking them. Each block is two storeys with a simple pitched roof which reflects the predominant architecture of the area. The alignment of the building respects the street pattern and presents a gable to The Meadows in the same manner that the outbuildings to the rear of the buildings on Castle Street generally do.”
The new build has been designed to impart a domestic feel as opposed to an institutional or monolithic look.
