£1.65m Highland community centre secures planning consent
February 25 2016
A £1.65m community centre in the small fishing village of Aultbea has been given the go-ahead by Highland Council on an empty plot adjacent to the existing outdated hall.Commissioned by Aultbea Regeneration Company the project was procured through a two-stage design process and will offer a multi-use sports hall in addition to a smaller space for more intimate meetings.
In a statement ThreeSixty Architecture wrote: “Aultbea Community Centre is inspired by the forms of the traditional Scottish Blackhouse, and Aultbea’s Nissen Hut. The internal space, forming the main hall, is enclosed by the required ancillary accommodation that read as habitable walls. The main hall itself responds to the community's aspiration for a vaulted ceiling that is top lit, to give a light and airy atmosphere whilst maintaining a sense of protection and enclosure.
“Framed views to the distant Torridon mountains have been captured in the main café area. This space is the social hub connecting the community to the activities that will take place within the hall.”
A café and two retail units will also be built, positioning the hall at the heart of community life.

Looks more than £1.65m but I like it. Nice scheme, a modern reinterpretation of the traditional vernacular without resorting to pastiche
