Glasgow School of Art restoration gets underway
Work to restore the fire-damaged Glasgow School of Art has begun with a team of heritage and conservation experts beginning the painstaking task of restoring the central library light which survived the blaze.

The lamps are being conserved for use in the restored building after over 600 fragments of the light fitting, including fragments of original glass, were recovered from the ruins during an archaeological survey.

These pieces have now been grouped together to allow an assessment of what material might be suitable for restoration, reinstatement or conservation.

Sarah McKinnon, Mackintosh building restoration project manager, said: "The general consensus from the experts we gathered together was that enough of the original metalwork and glass had survived to make restoration viable.”

“The next stage in the process will be testing the metal to ensure that is indeed strong enough to be reused and we will then move forward to appointing specialists to undertake this particularly challenging 3d puzzle.”

A group of experts including AOC Archaeology, Ceramic Restoration Scotland, Glasgow Life, Harley Haddow, Historic Environment Scotland, Page\Park Architects, Scottish Conservation Studios, The Glasgow Guild and The National Museums of Scotland have been assembled to oversee the work.

A wonder if Alan Dunlop will be there wae his placard pure moaning aboot how 'unprogessive' this restoration is. Afterall, MacKintosh would huv wanted it remade in an "unapologetically modern' style.

I gee ma support tae this reconstruction. You may proceed.

It is good to see this restoration progressing. Hopefully they actually make more use of the space they have, as to provide more space for the students. There is great demand for a decent amount of space per student, especially for the fees some people are paying.
