Aberdeen planners give thumbs up to 221 student rooms
November 4 2015
Crucible Alba and Michael laird Architects have obtained planning consent for 221 student rooms tracing an urban corner on Willowbank Road, currently occupied by a garage.Faced with a granite base course, mottled dark brick and white render the scheme has been designed to meld with the industrial heritage of the area whilst creating a distinct urban edge.
In a design statement the architects said: “The topography of the site provides the opportunity to ‘step’ the façade not only along Willowbank Road and Hardgate but also to the north towards Union Glen. This presents the three gables on the proposal at a similar height to the adjacent property gables.
“The introduction of an urban edge joining the residential buildings on both Willowbank Road and Hardgate creates a long continuous elevation. This is broken down by the stepping façade and the framing of blocks separated by glazed slots. Both of these reference the surrounding tenement blocks and further anchor the development into its context.”
Residents will have access to a café, games room and breakout space with a courtyard garden to the rear.
