Work gets underway on £2.5m Scottish Rugby Academy extension

Edinburgh Napier University has begun work on a £2.5m extension to the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy at its Sighthill campus to provide upgraded facilities for players, students and locals.Faced in blue brick and powder coated aluminium the Smith Scott Mullan Associates designed build will house a gym, physiotherapy suite and research facility in addition to a 30m indoor running track.
Napier University specialises in biomechanics with facilities including a state of the art physiology lab with its own environment chamber capable of varying atmospheric pressure, humidity and temperature.
Professor Andrea Nolan of Edinburgh Napier University, remarked: “Over the past six months, we have been developing plans for the new facilities at the University so we are excited to see the build off to a flying start.
“The centre will offer students, staff and the local community state-of-the-art gym facilities, as well as providing the Academy players with the amenities they need to improve and progress their skills.
“It will also be the University’s centre for development and provision of clinical exercise programmes, and research into exercise and cancer survivorship.
The BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy has been operating from the university for several months now with the aim of nurturing the next generation of rugby talent. Construction of the extension is scheduled to complete by late spring 2016.
