Collective Architecture take reins at Edinburgh City Observatory
Contemporary arts organisation Collective has employed their architectural namesake Collective Architecture to pick up the reins of a redevelopment of Edinburgh’s City Observatory following the demise of Malcolm Fraser Architects.

This follows the granting of planning approval for the creation of a new visual arts space within the Calton Hill compound; including a gallery, restaurant and public access.

The £3.5m project wills serve as a new home for the arts body when it opens its doors at the end of 2017, with construction expected to get underway early next year.

Kate Gray, Collective’s CEO and artistic director, said: “We are delighted that the plans for the site have been approved which will enable Collective to make the City Observatory on Calton Hill our new permanent home. The unique site will have a new future bring together contemporary art with the historical innovations the site was associated with in the past, creating an inspiring and exciting environment for both artists and visitors.”

To ensure continuity Collective Architecture has employed one of the project architects from Malcolm Fraser to carry the project through delivery.
