Pivoting pier to rebalance Inverness’s cultural scene
September 9 2015
A unique pivoting pier is to appear on the banks of the River Ness, Inverness, after a design competition to deliver a gathering place structure was won by Sans façon and KHBT.Highland Council have commissioned the idiosyncratic social space and viewing platform as a means to bolster the city’s cultural credentials and a focal point for the riverfront.
In their design statement KBHT observed: “The mechanism tilts slowly as the crowd gathers on the pier, and stops just above the water level. From an outlook onto the river and back to the city, it transforms into a platform just over the river when enough people come to use it.
“The tilting mechanism can be restrained to not come down further than a certain level during high water events or locked in a up position during extreme events.”
Three potential sites for the dynamic structure have now been shortlisted with a planning application expected next month.

I like the sound of this, simple yet elegant. Question is what is the material finish, seems to be the same thoughout...wood, stone, concrete???

It will be interesting to see which site they pick for this 'design without a site'. These guys should have a chat to Knight Architects. They did the Fan Bridge in Paddington Basin. Very elegant rising form.

This project would look great in Scottish whin or sandstone. I would hate to see it ending up like some of the other Scottish art projects which have favoured Chinese granite.
