Urban Union submit phase 2 plans for Pennywell
Urban Union have submitted plans for a further 177 new homes in the second phase of a regeneration master plan for the Pennywell area of Edinburgh which will deliver 715 mixed tenure homes over the next decade.

Designed by Barton Willmore the scheme would see homes arranged around a central open space within an area characterised by low density post-war housing.

Clad predominantly in brick with areas of feature zinc cladding, white brick and render with key entrances delineated by coloured blocks.

In their design statement the architects noted: “The focus is on attractive, simple proportions both in the form of the buildings and in the development of the elevations where we have proposed generous well proportioned windows arranged in ‘classic’ rhythms. This is combined with a simple palette of materials to create a family of buildings which complement each other and create a distinct character and identity.”

Work on the site is scheduled to get underway next year following completion of phase one works.
A key requirement for the architects was to create a sense of place and identity
