August 28 2015
Work to build 924 student flats as well as a collection of bars, shops, restaurants and office space is progressing apace at Holyrood North, the latest student housing led project to take shape in Edinburgh.Conceived as six individual blocks, four of which have been designed by Oberlanders and two by JM Architects; the £50m ‘post-graduate urban village’ slots into the wider John Hope master plan for the area.
This seeks to activate Holyrood Road through placement of an outreach centre, café, retail to create a mix of uses along the southern flank of the development whilst presenting a public face to the wider accommodation within.
A material palette of blonde sandstone, tan, cream and charcoal brickwork has been chosen with recessed and projecting elements to enliven the streetscape.
Landscaping is being carried out by HarrisonStevens as landscape architects with construction undertaken by Balfour Beatty. The project is scheduled to begin welcoming residents from next month.
