High-rise Aberdeen hotel set to take shape
August 25 2015
Aberdeen is brushing off the effects of a sliding oil price with Status Properties submitting plans for a hotel and office development in Aberdeen, the latest in a series of high rise proposals to emerge for the Justice Mill Lane area of the city.Designed by Archial Norr the plans call for the erection of a 4/5 star 100 room hotel and spa on the site of Budz Bar and offices of law firm Aberdein Considine, with only the street facing block of C-listed buildings retained.
In a pre-application report agents acting on behalf of the developer wrote: “The site offers a rare opportunity to create a landmark hotel in the heart of the city. This continues the on-going redevelopment of the west Union Street area.”
Complementary facilities including a spa, bar and lounge will also be created.

Is this the point at which we need to give up being exasperated and just accept that this is what the future of Union Street is going to look like?

It's beautiful, well design projects such as these that give me hope for the Architectural industry as a whole. Never mind the "sad" news from Edinburgh earlier this week, Aberdeen is the bastion of quality design!

Lets hope this, and the other developments within this area of Aberdeen, spring some life back to Union Street. Of course the design is not going to be to everyone's taste, I imagine the designer had large constraints to deal with and it certainly looks more interesting the the 'glass box' next to it. If you live in Aberdeen you will experience how dismal and lifeless Union Street is lets hope this encourages people back to what used to be a busy and vibrant street at the heart of Aberdeen.

So we have to thank Archial Norr, Keppie and Cooper Cromar for the combined effects of the changing skyline at this end of Union St?
At least this proposal has tried to inject a bit of variety into the massing and materials used....the others are massive bland boxes mind you they need to maximise the rentable sq ft as they are speculative offices?
