SSE to build £4m Pitlochry visitor centre
July 22 2015
SSE is to construct a £4m visitor centre overlooking Pitlochry Dam, utilising new technology to showcase the engineering which makes hydro power possible as well as the secrets of Salmon as they navigate a fish ladder on their journey upriver to spawn.Scheduled to open in Autumn 2016 the centre will welcome an estimated 50,000 visitors a year who make their way to the beauty spot, enhancing facilities with a café, shop and education suite.
Outgoing SSE chairman Lord Smith, said: “Hydro electricity improved the lives of ordinary people living in the north of Scotland and we have a responsibility to preserve and promote the remarkable stories from that time.
“I believe the best way to share these stories, both old and new, is to bring them together under one roof and being a Perthshire company we are proud to be announcing this investment in Pitlochry.”
Designed by BSP Architects the visitor centre will be open seven days a week at no cost to the public.
