Aberdeen’s Silver Fin to move on-site within weeks
June 9 2015
Sir Robert McAlpine are to move on-site of Titan Investors’ speculative Silver Fin development in Aberdeen within a matter of weeks after being awarded the construction contract. The £65m office block stretches to 132,000sq/ft and has been designed by Cooper Cromar to sit alongside a similar Keppie build on an adjacent plot, creating a new 'office zone' along the famous street.
Jonathan Nesbitt, director at property consultancy FG Burnett, said: “It is testament to the inherent strength of the Aberdeen market that such a level of institutional investment has been committed.
“We are delighted that building work is about to begin on site and that, so far, each planned phase of the project has been on track.”
Consisting of two distinct elements, a low-rise granite clad front elevation facing Union Street and a nine storey glass tower with feature vertical fins to the rear, the scheme is scheduled for completion by March 2017.

I'll admit I'm pleased to see investment in Union Street, anything that gives a reprieve to the streetscape from becoming more bookies or pound-shops is a step in the right direction. But the scale of these projects are going to dwarf all others surrounding them. I accept the attempt to retain some semblance of the original facade on the union street side but the interaction with the street at the rear will only significantly overshadow an already dark street and wipe out any views from the hotel behind.

You've got to give Aberdeen credit though -- they do have ambition: ambition for another carbuncle award.

What happened to the old planning chestnut of not allowing previous developments to be a precedent? Or do the planners in Aberdeen just not care any more?
