Dalry student housing scheme set to rise
CCG have begun construction work on a 234 bed student apartment build at Orwell Terrace, Dalry, designed by Allan Murray Architects on behalf of Develop Cityheart.

Utilising off-site construction techniques the £7m build will cater for students at Edinburgh Napier University, replacing a former warehouse with a campus of three buildings defined by a signature cylindrical block.

In their design statement the architects noted: “The proposals are for predominantly light coloured brick to the public facades. Large floor to ceiling windows, similar in scale to traditional tenements, will light the bedrooms; the living spaces will benefit from generous areas of glazing. Timber coloured panels will be used in certain sections within a gridded design to create richness and strength to key parts of the elevations. The less ‘public’ elevations will be in a panel or render finish.”

Located close to Haymarket Station overlooking Dalry Park the scheme should attain a BREEAM Very Good rating.

A further 178 student apartments will be delivered in tandem at the former Willowbank Primary, Glasgow, with both schemes set to welcome their first tenants in September 2016.

Looks fairly inoffensive, (which is meant to be a compliment). I like that it's not trying too hard and has (historically) respectful proportions. Why did it need a 'signature cylindrical block' though? Drum shaped buildings are for grain silos and Mario Botta. Can't say I've ever liked or understood one.
