Edinburgh City Council has given its approval to a £120m masterplan for the Fountainbridge area of the city; comprising 78 flats, 180 bed hotel, shops, 17,000sq/m of retail/commercial space and 13,000 sq/m of office space together with associated public realm work. The mixed use masterplan for Freer Street will see creation of an Urban Villa branded boutique hotel designed by New York based Grzywinski+Pons in collaboration with Michael Laird Architects.
Led by Amco |Developments this forms part of a wider regeneration strategy drawn up by Union Hanover Securities (UHS).
UHS managing director Eric Jafari said: “We aspire for Urban Villa to serve as a social and cultural hub to the local corporate and residential community. Grzywinski+Pons has created something quite special – which, in our opinion, will make great strides in transforming the Union Canal into a vibrant ecosystem/destination.”
Construction work should start this October, with further detailed applications for specific components of the masterplan expected shortly, drawn up in collaboration with neighbouring landowners such as the EDI Group to ensure a consistent approach..
